Writing pieces will be scored in 5 domains: Focus, Content, Organization, Style, Conventions (spelling, punctuation, and capitals). You will notice that not every story is scored in each of the domains. I will make notes on the papers to reflect the domains that were scored.

Informational/Explanatory
Informational/ explanatory writing conveys information accurately.  The writer’s purpose is to increase the reader’s knowledge, to help the reader better understand a procedure or process, or to improve the reader’s comprehension of a concept.  Informational writing begins with the assumption of truthfulness and answers questions of why or how.  Writers draw information from their knowledge and primary and secondary sources.  They must select and incorporate relevant examples, facts, and details.

Opinion
Opinion writing involves expressing thoughts, feelings, and beliefs about a particular topic or issue. At this age, opinion writing is typically simple and straightforward, focusing on developing basic skills rather than sophisticated arguments. Students write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply reasons that support the opinion, use linking words (e.g., because, and, also) to connect opinion and reasons and provide a concluding statement or section.

Narrative

Students select a personal experience or event that is meaningful to them.  Students write narrative stories in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order and provide a sense of closure. These stories foster creativity and self-expression.
